Chapter FiveJo snuggled down into Kevin’s side, relieved when he drifted off to sleep. She slowly stroked her hand up and down his chest. She loved the way his skin felt against hers. He was so solid and strong. But there was such vulnerability inside him, behind his eyes. When she’d held him inside of her, Jo had felt a connection, a deep well of oneness that she’d never really believed existed outside of her painting. When she held a brush in her hand, reality slipped away and Jo was carried on a river of creativity that was born from her soul. It was natural and right and she never called into question the goodness of it.

She had the same feeling lying beside Kevin, holding him inside of her. Making love with him made her feel like she did when she painted.

He stirred beneath her hand, giving a luxurious little stretch that sent tingles along her skin where it was pressed to his.

“Are you okay?” Jo smiled at the inane question. Lazy satisfaction glowed around him, but it was obvious he was uncomfortable with small talk.

“You don’t have to say anything right now, Kevin.” Her finger circled his nipple in a slow caress.

He shifted to his side to face her, his head in his hand. Those lake blue eyes boring into her.

“How do you do that?” he asked, reaching out to move her tangled hair away from her face.

Jo shrugged her shoulders. She wasn’t about to tell him that his emotions were practically bleeding through his skin. He might be getting more comfortable with the idea of her gift, but she doubted he was that comfortable

“Does it matter?” she finally asked. “Just know that I don’t need you to fill the quiet space with platitudes that have no meaning.” He continued to stroke her hair and broke out into a giant smile.

“Joanna, you are truly unlike any woman I have ever known.”

“Is that a good thing?”

He gave her a bad boy smile, and was leaning in to take her lips when a shrill beeping sound jerked them apart.

“Shit” Kevin muttered. He rolled out of the bed and stumbled to the living room to grab jacket. Pulling the radio out of his pocket he barked, “Kryszenski,” and scowled at the response.

“Massive structure fire at 2128 Currier. All personnel called to duty.”

He cursed again. “Kryszenski to base, eta ten minutes.”

Jo stood in the bedroom doorway wrapped in a sheet watching him, her heart in her throat. Kevin slid past her with a brief caress to her cheek, stooping to grab his jeans.

. “My storage building,” she said softly.

He was tugging his shirt over his head, but paused. “What?”

“That address…that… That’s where my storage area is.”

Kevin finished pulling on his shirt and moved to her side, cupping her face in his large, strong hands and dropping a gentle kiss to her lips. “Damn, baby. I’m sorry.”

Jo tightened her grip on the sheet and followed him into the living room. “Let me come with you.
